Day 14: John 1-5 Opening Reflection

I like the Gospel Writer John.  He or She had a way of telling the story that was different than the other synoptic gospels.  The opening of John is so intriguing: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  The Gospel of John is really a divine account of the Word coming to dwell with, in, and through human beings.

In today’s prescribed text the Word that came to me, therefore, was centered on Jesus and his miracle at the wedding.  Jesus’ question to his mother was, “Why do you bother me?”  But her answer was to tell the servants to do whatever he said.  Isn’t that funny, a mother always knows what their children are capable of.  More so than that, Mary’s faith was on full display.  She believed in Jesus and knew that Jesus would show up and show out.  Can anybody testify that when Jesus shows up Jesus shows out?

The climax to the story, however, was the guest’s response to the wine.  And I thought about that response and no matter what I was listening to, the theme kept running through my head…”Saving the Best for Last.”

The waiters and waitresses had done all they could do, and were left with only water to serve no more wine, but Jesus was able to use their leftovers to bring about hangovers.  Has Jesus ever done anything in your life to the point where you just can’t get over it, your mind is just hung over on Jesus’ miraculousness, Jesus’ graciousness, Jesus’ greatness, and Jesus’ Godliness.

Why do you bother Jesus?  Hopefully you do not save Jesus for last but you bring Jesus out all the time.  Not just for special occasions or to impress your guests.  The Lord said its okay to be Drunk of the Spirit so there’s no need to save the best for last because the Best will LAST as long as you need.  I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to a Jesus hangover . . .
